The epic Biblical story of the Resurrection is told through the eyes of a non-believer in the film RISEN. Clavius (Joseph Fiennes), a powerful Roman military tribune, and his aide, Lucius (Tom Felton), are tasked with solving the mystery of what happened to Jesus (Cliff Curtis) in the weeks following the crucifixion. Their mission is to disprove the rumors of a risen Messiah and prevent an uprising in Jerusalem.
As a powerful and respected Roman officer, Clavius is commissioned by Pontius Pilate to investigate the disappearance of Jesus' body from its tomb. Together with his aide, Lucius, Clavius embarks on a thorough search, interviewing witnesses and examining evidence to uncover the truth. However, the deeper they delve into the case, the more perplexed they become, as the testimonies they gather seem to point to a miraculous resurrection.
Clavius, a pragmatic and skeptical man, is determined to find a logical explanation that would dispel the growing belief in Jesus' return from the dead. He becomes increasingly frustrated as the investigation leads him to encounters with the Disciples, who are adamant that they have seen the resurrected Christ. Lucius, on the other hand, is more open-minded and begins to question his own beliefs as the evidence mounts.
As the two men continue their inquiry, they are drawn deeper into the complex web of events surrounding the crucifixion and its aftermath. They witness the profound changes in the behavior and demeanor of the Disciples, who have been transformed from fearful and defeated individuals into confident and unwavering followers of the risen Messiah.
Clavius' rational mind is challenged as he grapples with the possibility that the unthinkable has occurred – that Jesus has truly risen from the grave. The more he investigates, the more he is forced to confront his own preconceptions and the limits of his understanding.
Ultimately, Clavius' journey becomes a personal one, as he is compelled to examine his own beliefs and the nature of faith. As he delves deeper into the mystery, he finds himself increasingly drawn to the transformative power of the Resurrection and the hope it represents for a world in need of redemption.
In RISEN, the viewer is invited to share in Clavius' search for the truth, to witness the unfolding of this epic Biblical tale through the eyes of a skeptic. The film offers a unique perspective on one of the most pivotal events in human history, inviting the audience to question their own beliefs and to consider the profound impact of the Resurrection on the lives of those who experienced it firsthand.
